The Story behind the Bestowed Saxophone
There is no record of how and when King Bhumibol bestowed this saxophone to Faculty of Medicine,
Chulalongkorn University but from the story of Pilot Officer Prof. Dr. Manrattana Srigranon, National
artist and member of Laikram Band and Or. Sor. Wansuk Band, Captain Chatchawan Atthajinda, M.D.,
early era member of CU Band, Prof. Jatuporn Hongprapas,M.D., and Senior in MDCU who were part of
the history saying that King Bhumibol bestowed this saxophone through Prof. Choop Chotiksathian, M.D.,
Director of surgery department. That time should be around 1957 and was a golden age of Thai music
industry as King Bhumibol performed music instrument in public and he is also teacher and a sponsor of
Big Band establishment.
In order to give you clearer vision of that time, these are events in that period in short
1952 (Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University established in 1947) King Bhumibol founded “Or.
Sor radio station.”(Aumpornstan) Broadcasting music performance of his personal music band which
known as Laikram and later on changed its name to Or. Sor. Wansuk Band and Pilot Officer
Prof. Dr. Manrattana Srigranon was a member in two bands.
1954 King Bhumibol composed a song called "Mahachulalongkorn" and bestowed to Chulalongkorn
University
1957 King Bhumibol gave permission to Chulalongkorn university students to receive in audience at
dance stage,Suan Ampporn on the occasion which HRH performed a music for broadcasting on Or.
Sor radio station. And in the following year...
1958 King Bhumibol brought Laikram Band to perform in auditorium of Chulalongkorn University and
was thebeginning of music performance day at Chulalongkorn University.
And in same period, CU Band Chulalongkorn University was established along with MDCU Band which has the
same members. When HRH acknowledged of music instrument budget problem which was very expensive at
that time, so, he granted his music instrument which was this saxophone. This saxophone was one of music
instruments which was given by him to support Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University music band.
After received the saxophone, band members played it and the saxophone was passing on from generation to
generation. Associate Professor Troong Phanthumakomol, M.D. was a musician at that time, used to play the
saxophone. Presently, his saxophone is conserved and is one of invaluable property of the faculty.
Associate Professor Troong Phanthumakomol, M.D., former Director of Department of Orthopedic surgery,
Faculty of Medicine and talented musician and former President of Western music club of Chulalongkorn
University.
